Garbage Collection Proposal
Maplewood Township is presently considering a Proposal to Establish a Maplewood Township-wide Residenntial Garbage Collection System.
The Green Team has worked with the Township Committee and the Environmental Advisory Council to develop a proposal to reduce the cost to residents for garbage collection and provide incentives to reduce the volume of what people throw away.
Under the proposed system all garbage and trash from single family homes and residential buildings with up to four units would be collected by a hauler contracted by the Township. The collection contract would be funded by a garbage collection fee billed by the town. Residents would be required to place all trash and garbage in specially marked bags or to attach stickers to each of the bags they throw away.
The bags or stickers would be purchased at stores throughout Maplewood, at Town Hall, or directly from the hauler. The price of the bags or stickers would cover the cost to tip the garbage at the Essex County Incinerator and would provide an incentive to reduce the amount that people throw away. If you throw less away, you would need fewer bags/stickers, and you would therefore pay less.
If adopted, this system is expected to save Township residents between $450,000 and $900,000 per year.
