Appliances and Electronics

Go to this great resource on recycling appliances and electronics for information on what you can do to responsibly dispose of used and/or broken appliances and electronics.  In addition, check out the "Electronics Items" section listed below.

Batteries

In January 2010, a number of New Jersey municipalities, Essex County among them, decided to limit the recycling of alkaline batteries.  Manufacturers have limited the amount of mercury where it is no longer considered hazardous.

The state still requires the recycling of rechargeable batteries such as the ones that power your laptop, cell phones, cordless phone, digital camera, two-way radio, camcorder, remote control toys and portable power tools.  You can take these to the Department of Public Works at 359 Boyden Avenue.  You can also take car batteries to the DPW.  For a listing of local businesses that accept rechargeable batteries for recycling click here.  You can also stop by the following stores which accept rechargeable batteries for recycling: Radio Shack, Best Buy, Staples, Target, Office Max, Lowes, Home Depot, Sears, Walmart and Verizon Wireless.

The next electronics recycling date for our two towns (we share the electronics recycling) is at the South Orange Recycling Center (300 Walton Avenue) on Saturday June 19th 2010 from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.  They will accept Computers - Monitors - Printers – Fax Machines – Scanners – Telecom Equipment – Speakers – Televisions – Keyboards – Main Frames – VCRs –  Stereos – DVD Players – Toasters – Irons – Old Cellular Telephones If you have any questions please call 973-762-1175.
